Maeva 2009 will have great games in its
semifinal games, both genders. In the men´s
competition, Canada 1 will play against Mexico
1, and Cuba´s confronting Canada 2. In the
women´s competition, United States will play
Mexico 1, and Cuba will have to eliminate Canada
2, if they want to be in the final game.
The first female´s game this Saturday was held
at Estadio Miramar, where United States (Van
Fleet-Smith) defeated Saint Lucia
(Mann-Hamilton), with scores 21-11 and 21-7.
At Maeva Stadium, Costa Rica (Morales-Alfaro),
started their day winning, against Trinidad and
Tobago (Joseph-Phillip), in two sets, 21-9 and
21-13.
The next game was held in this same court, where
locals Vanessa Virgen and Polet Cruz (Mexico 2)
lost to Mexico 3 (Reyes-Herrera), in an
interesting game that went to a third set, with
scores 21-23, 21-16 and 11-15.
The women´s competition continued at Maeva
Stadium, and Guatemala (Orellana-Ramirez) beat
in two sets against Costa Rica´s Morales-Alfaro,
with a double 21-16.
In the next game, Mexico 3 females, with
Reyes-Herrera, couldn´t beat Puerto Rico´s
Santiago-Acevedo, which had an easy first set,
10-21, and suffered in the second set, but still
beat 22-24.
Cuba (Ion Canet-Milagros Crespo) qualified to
semifinals after beating Mexico 1 (Estrada-Revueltas),
in two competitive sets, 21-17 and 24-22.
United States was the second women´s team to go
to semifinals, after they beat Canada 2 in
Miramar Stadium, 21-13 and 21-16.
The third women´s team to qualify for the
semifinals was Canada 2 (Thomas-Broder), which
defeated the Puerto Rican´s, in two sets, by
16-21 and 17-21.
Mexico 1 won a place in the women´s semifinal,
after winning to El Salvador, in two sets, 17-21
and 19-21, in the last game of this Saturday.
In the men´s competition, Saturday´s first game
was the opening game at Estadio Maeva, and
Canada 2 (Sewell-Reader) defeated Trinidad and
Tobago (Williams-Whitfield), with identical
scores, 21-13.
Mexico´s second team, Ulises and Lombardo
Ontiveros, defeated Costa Ricans López-Monge
without many complications, in a pair of sets,
21-8 and 21-11.
One of the biggest surprises in the tournament
happened at noon, when Mexico 4, Oscar Cardenas
and Edgar Barajas, had a victory over the United
States (Burnham-Jagoda), in two sets, 21-14 and
21-17.
Mexico 2, Ulises and Lombardo Ontiveros, played
an excellent game against Canada 1 (Binstock-Zbysewski),
that went on to three sets. Despite their good
game, Mexico lost 25-23, 20-22, 15-17.
In one of the starring matches of this Saturday,
Mexico 1 (Miramontes-Virgen), past over Puerto
Rico in two sets, 21-13 and 21-12, and they won
their pass to Sundays semifinals.
Cuba, in men´s competition, played at Miramar
Stadium and qualified to semifinals, after
beating Mexico 3 leaving no doubt of its
quality, with scores 21-12 and 21-03.
Mexico 3 lost again, and missed their chances to
semifinals, when they lost to Canada 1 in
quarterfinals, 21-10 and 21-14. Canada 1 is
semifinalist.
Canada 2 won its place in the men´s semifinals,
after a great game that finished in three sets
against Puerto Rico. The score was 15-21, 24-22
and 13-15.
